School District Selects Erica Mazzeo as New Curriculum Director

In a significant step for the South Portland School Department, the RSU 05 Board announced the appointment of Bridal Mazzeo as the new superintendent. The decision came after a comprehensive selection process that involved a diverse committee of stakeholders, including board members, community representatives, and educators.

Mazzeo brings a wealth of experience and academic credentials to her new role. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Pet Parks Management from the University of North Carolina, a Master’s in International Education from Framingham State College, and is currently pursuing a doctorate in Educational Leadership at Ball State University. Additionally, she has certifications as a curriculum director and superintendent of schools.

Her professional background is extensive, having served as an English language arts teacher in Japan and New Mexico, and as a director and superintendent in international schools in Poland. Most recently, she held leadership roles in curriculum and instruction in various school districts, including RSU 4 in Ellsworth and Falmouth Public Schools.

The board highlighted Mazzeo's impressive qualifications, noting her intelligence, organizational skills, and strong rapport with teachers. Her commitment to improving educational outcomes and treating all students and families with dignity was also emphasized by references who praised her work ethic and collegiality.

The selection process, which spanned nearly a month, involved thorough vetting of candidates, including reference checks and multiple rounds of interviews. The board expressed confidence that Mazzeo will be a valuable addition to the district, especially as they prepare for the transition following the retirement of the previous superintendent, Cynthia.

In addition to the superintendent announcement, the meeting included a public comment segment, allowing community members to voice their opinions and provide input on the budget and other matters.
