Freeport City Council Ratifies Emergency Repairs for Water Main and Dispatch Center AC

The Freeport City Council took decisive action during its meeting on July 21, 2025, approving several emergency resolutions aimed at addressing critical infrastructure needs and ensuring public safety.

One of the most significant resolutions ratified was for the emergency hauling of construction debris by Fisher Excavating, which was necessitated by the city’s ongoing water, sewer, and street repairs. With over 18 months of accumulated debris, the utility construction crew faced a storage crisis, prompting the council to approve a $21,000 expenditure for the removal of 2,700 cubic yards of waste. This decision is expected to alleviate the immediate storage issues and facilitate ongoing construction efforts.

In another key resolution, the council approved $11,330 for emergency water main repairs on Galena Avenue, where a significant leak threatened local businesses and required specialized equipment for repair. The city’s utility crews collaborated with Fisher Excavating to manage the challenging repair, which was complicated by the concrete infrastructure beneath the roadway. This proactive measure is crucial for maintaining water service and preventing further disruptions.

Additionally, the council addressed ongoing issues at the 911 dispatch center, approving the replacement of a malfunctioning air conditioning unit at a cost of $5,000. The outdated system had been leaking and was deemed critical for the operation of the dispatch center, which relies on a stable environment for its equipment. Funding for this repair will come from the Emergency Telephone System Board (ETSB), ensuring that general funds are not impacted.

Lastly, the council ratified emergency repairs to the taxiway lighting system at Albertus Airport, which had failed and posed safety risks for nighttime operations. The repairs, costing $15,523.31, were necessary to maintain compliance with safety regulations and will be funded through the airport's operating budget.
