School Board Reviews Classroom Temperature and Cell Phone Policies for Student Wellbeing

The Penfield Central School District Board of Education held its organizational meeting on July 15, 2025, where key policies regarding classroom temperature management and cell phone usage were discussed.

The second major discussion focused on the use of internet-enabled devices during school hours, particularly cell phones. The proposed policy restricts personal electronic devices at the elementary level, prohibiting them from being brought to school or on buses. For middle school students, devices must be powered off and stored throughout the school day. High school students face similar restrictions, with devices also needing to be powered off and stored. The rationale behind this policy is to reduce distractions and address concerns related to student mental health, disciplinary issues, and engagement levels.

Board members raised questions about how parents could communicate with their children under the new cell phone policy. In response, it was noted that the district is developing a communication plan, allowing high school students to use email to contact their families. However, for middle school students, the district is cautious about two-way communication due to safety concerns.
