Maui Economic Recovery Commission outlines recovery projects after community wildfire devastation

The Maui County Budget, Finance, and Economic Development Committee convened on July 22, 2025, to discuss the findings of the Maui Economic Recovery Commission (ERC) and its ongoing efforts to support the recovery of Lahaina following the devastating wildfires. The meeting highlighted the collaborative work of over 100 community leaders from various sectors, including education, healthcare, and small businesses, who contributed to the ERC's final report published in March.

Director James Tokioka opened the session by expressing gratitude to the community members and the Office of Economic Development for their roles in the recovery process. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that approximately 1,800 individuals were relocated into temporary shelters within two weeks of the disaster. Tokioka explained that the ERC was formed to address the long-term economic recovery needs of West Maui, which has faced significant challenges since the fires.

The ERC identified 34 recovery ideas, which were distilled into 11 priority projects aimed at revitalizing the local economy. These initiatives are part of a broader long-term recovery plan for Lahaina. Tokioka mentioned that the report, along with supporting data, is accessible on the Maui Nui Strong website, ensuring transparency and community engagement.

The meeting also featured discussions about ongoing programs initiated by the ERC, including cultural events and fundraising efforts to further support the recovery. Tokioka noted the importance of community input in shaping these initiatives, reflecting a commitment to inclusivity in the recovery process.
