City Council Launches Community CERT Program to Enhance Emergency Preparedness

The Westland City Council meeting on July 21, 2025, highlighted a significant community initiative aimed at enhancing local emergency preparedness through the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program. Councilman Hornbuckle, who has been a strong advocate for the CERT program, thanked his colleagues and Director Awadi for their support and dedication over the past two and a half years. He acknowledged the hard work of resident Erin Anderson, who played a crucial role in preparing materials and organizing training sessions for participants. This past weekend, the program successfully trained 14 individuals, with additional participants from neighboring Livonia, bringing the total to nearly 20.

The CERT program encourages residents to volunteer and become actively involved in their community, serving as vital resources during emergencies. Participants will be trained to assist in various situations, such as identifying hazards, helping with disaster response, and supporting local events. Councilman Hornbuckle invited residents aged 18 and up to join the program, highlighting the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in their neighborhoods.
