Town Expands Park System With New Recreation Master Plan and Multiple Parks

During the recent Pittsboro Planning Board meeting on July 21, 2025, significant discussions centered around the town's evolving park system and recreational facilities, highlighting a commitment to enhancing community spaces for residents.

The board has been actively reviewing the town's overall park system for the past eight months, building on a recreation master plan established four years ago. This plan originally identified five potential park locations in the South Village. However, with the recent addition of a 70-acre park along Robeson Creek, the number of planned parks has been adjusted to four, including two community parks and two neighborhood parks.

In a proactive move, the board has expanded the master plan to include a total of 12 parks, thanks to the strategic reduction of a large 240-acre site to 130 acres. This adjustment allows for the development of parks in areas that have previously lacked adequate recreational facilities. The board emphasized the importance of determining park locations based on community needs, ensuring that new developments align with the recreational requirements of residents.

One notable project discussed is a proposed 50-acre park in Section 2.1, which is expected to serve as a major sports complex, accommodating soccer and baseball activities. This park's early dedication is seen as a crucial step in meeting the growing demand for sports facilities in the area.

Additionally, the board outlined plans for a comprehensive Greenway system, featuring 30 miles of trails, with 20 miles located in the South Village. These trails will connect parks and neighborhoods, promoting outdoor activities and enhancing community connectivity.
