Superintendent Schumacher Introduces New Leadership and Faces Budget Challenges in Shawnee Mission

In a dynamic kickoff to the 2025-2026 school year, Shawnee Mission School District Superintendent Dr. Mike Schumacher delivered an impactful report during the Board Meeting on July 21, highlighting both challenges and exciting initiatives.

Dr. Schumacher, now entering his second year as superintendent, introduced new leadership team members, including Sherry Dumeline as the associate superintendent of special education and strategic initiatives, and Drew Lane as the Executive Director of Information and Communication Technologies. He emphasized the importance of having a strong team to support the district's mission of providing quality education.

A significant concern raised during the meeting was the district's impending loss of nearly $1 million in federal funding, which supports migrant families and English language learners. Dr. Schumacher expressed urgency in addressing this issue, stating he has reached out to federal representatives to advocate for the release of these crucial funds. "We will continue to advocate for this funding release... so that we can continue to do what is best for all kids," he affirmed.

In a more uplifting announcement, Dr. Schumacher unveiled the district's theme for the year: "Because Kids." This initiative aims to refocus the community's efforts on the core purpose of education—ensuring every student achieves their personal best. "We serve every student every day, and we will do all of that and then necessary in serving that mission because kids," he stated, rallying support for the district's goals.

The meeting also touched on community engagement, with a recent non-teaching career fair aimed at filling various support roles within the district. Dr. Schumacher encouraged community members to consider joining the Shawnee Mission team, highlighting the importance of these positions in fostering student success.

As the meeting concluded, board members shared updates on various committees, with plans for upcoming events, including the Shawnee Mission Education Foundation's annual breakfast on October 7. The board expressed enthusiasm for the year ahead, with a commitment to enhancing educational experiences for all students in the district.
