Crystal City Civic Association Discusses Underground Access and Site Plan Amendments

During the Arlington County Board's regular meeting on July 19, 2025, discussions centered on the future of the underground spaces in Crystal City, particularly regarding accessibility and safety concerns. A key topic was the potential for residents and hotel guests to access these areas through a fob-operated door. However, both the hotel and residential operations teams expressed strong opposition to this idea, citing operational challenges and public safety issues, including recent incidents of vandalism and theft in the underground.

The board acknowledged the importance of activating the Crystal Drive frontage and enhancing accessibility to the area. A new Metro entrance on Crystal Drive is expected to improve access from the street, making it easier for residents and visitors to navigate the area. Importantly, the current barriers to the underground are not permanent; the walls can be removed in the future if conditions change and the underground becomes a viable space again.

In addition to the underground discussions, the board reviewed plans for adaptive reuse of existing buildings, emphasizing the need for a consistent approach to site plan projects.
