Elkhart Redevelopment Commission Approves Asbestos Removal for Woodland Crossing Site

The Elkhart City Redevelopment Commission convened a special meeting on April 29, 2025, to discuss significant developments regarding the Woodland Crossing site. The commission received two quotes for the asbestos removal project, with the recommendation to hire Specialty Systems South Bend Inc. Their quote of $98,000 was selected due to its competitive pricing and the company's qualifications. The asbestos removal is a crucial step in preparing the site for future redevelopment, with work expected to commence between May 19 and June 13, 2025.

During the discussion, the commission addressed the safety measures that will be implemented during the asbestos removal process, including the use of specialized equipment and protective gear by the contractors. The commission emphasized that all work would comply with federal, state, and local regulations.

Following the approval of the asbestos removal proposal, the commission outlined plans for interior demolition of the building, which will involve removing walls and equipment to facilitate redevelopment. An architect has been engaged to assist with this phase, and further updates on the project are anticipated in upcoming meetings.

The meeting also touched on the renewal of the management agreement for the shopping center and plans for continued engagement with the local neighborhood to support leasing efforts and financial analysis.

Looking ahead, the commission scheduled an Economic Development Corporation (EDC) meeting for May 6, 2025, to review the EDC report and bond ordinances related to the Boulder Run project. The next commission meeting is set for May 13, 2025, where further developments will be discussed.
