Councilor Merkel advocates for electric leaf blowers over gas models for environmental health

In a recent Salem City Council Committee meeting, the discussion centered on the environmental and health impacts of leaf blowers, with a strong push for transitioning from gas-powered to electric models. Councilor Merkel highlighted alarming statistics, noting that just one hour of operation of a gas leaf blower emits as much smog-forming pollution as driving a car for 1,100 miles, according to the California Air Resources Board.

The committee emphasized the benefits of leaving leaves on lawns, which can nourish soil and support local biodiversity. Councilor Merkel shared insights from resident Zach Calderon, referencing the American Lung Association's recommendation for electric leaf blowers due to their reduced impact on air quality and respiratory health. The health risks associated with gas leaf blowers are significant, with regular users facing increased chances of cardiovascular disease, respiratory illnesses, and even prenatal health issues.

Noise pollution was another critical point of discussion. Gas leaf blowers operate at 80 to 90 decibels, comparable to the sound of a motorcycle or jackhammer, while electric models are quieter, ranging from 65 to 70 decibels. The cost comparison also favored electric blowers, which are generally cheaper to purchase and maintain over time, despite the higher price of replacement batteries.

The committee's findings underscore a growing awareness of the need for cleaner, safer landscaping equipment, with electric leaf blowers emerging as a viable alternative for both environmental sustainability and public health.
