Sons of the American Revolution Celebrate Declaration's Semiquincentennial in Las Cruces

The Las Cruces City Council meeting held on July 21, 2025, commenced with a moment of recognition for the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces, as well as local police and fire departments. Following this, attendees participated in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The meeting featured a presentation by the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), represented by Bill Kinsella. He highlighted the organization's mission to promote patriotism and educate future generations about the founding principles of the United States. Kinsella noted that the SAR is celebrating the semi-quincentennial of the Declaration of Independence, emphasizing the importance of their work in the community.

Kinsella shared that the SAR has approximately 36,000 members nationwide, with a local chapter in Las Cruces consisting of about 100 members. He mentioned the historical significance of their members, including one whose ancestor was a second cousin to George Washington. The SAR has been active in educating local students about the American Revolution through presentations at various schools and community events.

Additionally, Kinsella discussed the SAR's involvement in honoring veterans, including providing honor guards for funerals of World War II soldiers and participating in community events such as Wreaths Across America. The organization also recognizes outstanding service in the community through awards and medals, including the Gadsden Medal for first responders and ROTC cadets.

The meeting concluded with expressions of gratitude towards the SAR for their contributions to the community and their ongoing efforts to promote patriotism and honor the nation’s history.
