California Community Colleges Expand Successful Umoja and Mesa Programs with Legislative Support

California Community Colleges are making significant strides in expanding their support programs, with nearly 80 Umoja programs now operating across the system. This growth is largely attributed to ongoing legislative support, which has been crucial in scaling these initiatives aimed at enhancing student success. During the recent Board of Governors meeting, members highlighted the importance of social and emotional support, academic assistance, and basic needs resources as key components of these programs.

Dr. Bull, in his presentation, emphasized that these programs are no longer viewed as isolated efforts but are integral to the colleges' equity work. The collaborative approach among campuses is fostering a more inclusive environment for students, ensuring that support is accessible and effective.

Chancellor Christian also introduced an upcoming dynamic microsite designed to enhance access to resources and information. This site will feature AI capabilities, including a voice reader and an AI bot trained to assist users with queries related to the college's Vision 2030 initiative. While the microsite is still under development, the current documents are available on the Chancellor's office website.

Public comments during the meeting underscored the importance of maintaining human connections in education, especially as AI tools become more prevalent. Arunette Lumani Bersood, the new president of the Faculty Association of California Community Colleges, stressed that while AI can be a valuable resource, the role of faculty as mentors and emotional supporters remains irreplaceable.
