Family Business Thrives in Coral Gables Since Cuban Immigration

Carlos Bolado, a prominent figure in Coral Gables, shared a compelling narrative about his family's journey and the evolution of local business during a recent City Council meeting. Bolado recounted how his father, a Cuban immigrant and custom tailor, established a successful store on Ponce Leon Boulevard after fleeing Cuba in 1962.

Reflecting on the vibrant business landscape of the 1970s, Bolado noted that Coral Gables attracted multinational companies, bringing in a steady stream of executives who frequented his father's store. "We had Texaco, Exxon, and even pilots from Pan Am and Delta coming in for fittings," he said, highlighting the community's bustling atmosphere.

Bolado also reminisced about notable customers, including Forrest Mars, founder of the Mars candy company, and the excitement surrounding events like the Super Bowl in 1976. He emphasized the importance of personal connections in business, stating, "You get to know your customer, you take care of your customer, you will be successful."

Despite challenges faced by local businesses, Bolado remained optimistic about Coral Gables, crediting his father's active involvement in the community through organizations like the Lions Club.
