City Expands EV Charging Infrastructure With Eight New Chargers in Bar Harbor

Ellsworth's Finance Committee has reported promising early results from the newly installed electric vehicle (EV) chargers, which are now operational and attracting users. The city has invested approximately $10,000 in the new charging infrastructure, which has already generated revenue within its first week of operation. This investment replaces two previously free chargers that cost the city $7,000 annually to maintain, effectively quadrupling the city's EV charging capacity from two to eight stations.

The committee discussed the potential for further marketing efforts to increase awareness of the new chargers, which are strategically located to encourage tourism and support local businesses. Early indicators suggest that the new chargers are being utilized more frequently than the old ones, which primarily served local residents.

In addition to the operational updates, the committee addressed the deactivation of the old chargers on Franklin Street. These chargers are no longer functional, and the city is exploring options for their future, including potential repurposing or sale. The committee emphasized the importance of not wasting existing infrastructure and is considering reaching out to the original installer, Climate to Thrive, to discuss possible alternatives for the deactivated chargers.
