Mayor of Lima reviews mid-year city operations and progress towards community goals

Lima City Council has outlined a comprehensive mid-year update on city operations, highlighting significant progress across various departments during their recent meeting. Mayor's report emphasized the theme of "people-powered progress," showcasing the city's commitment to community engagement and development.

One of the standout achievements is the reduction in crime rates, with total crime down by 4% and violent crime by 3% compared to last year. The Lima Police Department has welcomed 11 new officers in 2024, the highest number in a decade, with an additional four sworn in this year, bringing the total to 82 officers, many of whom are local residents.

In response to increasing emergency calls, the fire department is also expanding its capabilities. A feasibility study for a new fire station has been initiated, with plans to generate funds through the EMS Reserve Fund, expected to yield over $800,000 annually.

The city is also making strides in housing initiatives, having replaced 992 service lines since 2024 and abating 13 homes to eliminate lead exposure for children. The rapid rental repair program has successfully returned 13 vacant units to the market, providing affordable housing options for low to moderate-income families.

Public spaces are undergoing significant enhancements, including a $2 million transformation of the Miss Paul Cheryl Allen Center into a community learning hub and improvements to parks and recreational facilities. The upcoming Veterans Memorial Grove will feature public art installations, with construction set to begin soon.

Economic growth initiatives are underway, including the Central Avenue streetscape project, which aims to revitalize downtown with new sidewalks and green spaces. The city is also collaborating with Mercy Health to open a childcare center this fall, supporting working families.

Despite facing challenges such as a 3% drop in income tax revenue, the city is proactively managing its budget, prioritizing essential services like public safety and infrastructure. The 2026 budget planning is already in progress, focusing on community needs.
