Grand Rapids launches $20M community center and pool renovations at Martin Luther King Park

The Grand Rapids City Council has announced significant upgrades to Martin Luther King Park, including a $20 million investment in a new community center and pool renovations. City Manager Mark Washington shared updates during a recent meeting, highlighting the ongoing construction and improvements aimed at enhancing community engagement and recreation.

The pool, which opened on June 6, has already welcomed over 11,000 visitors in its first month. The newly renovated bathhouse features modern amenities, including 14 changing rooms and restrooms, all designed to be fully accessible. The facility aims to provide a welcoming environment for all residents, with a unique lighting system indicating room availability.

In addition to the pool upgrades, the new community center will include an NBA-sized basketball gym, a banquet space for 200 guests, and classrooms that can accommodate smaller gatherings. The center is designed to serve as a hub for community activities, with features like a fitness studio and offices for local organizations.

Washington emphasized the importance of this project, noting that it represents a transformative investment in the heart of the neighborhood. The completion of the community center and additional site improvements, including a playground and fitness loop, is expected by early 2026. The city plans to offer public tours and programming shortly after the center opens, aiming to foster community involvement and enjoyment of the new facilities.
