Waynesboro Council Considers Appointing Representatives to Workforce Development Board

Waynesboro City Council has taken a significant step towards enhancing local workforce development by considering the appointment of two representatives to the Shenandoah Valley Workforce Development Board. This board plays a crucial role in overseeing and administering the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), which guides workforce development programs for adults, dislocated workers, and youth across the United States.

During the meeting, Mr. Hitchen highlighted that the Shenandoah Valley Workforce Development Board is one of 15 such boards in Virginia, covering a region from Rockbridge County to the Maryland line. The board is responsible for setting local policies that align with state regulations and serves as a strategic convener for workforce stakeholders to tackle development issues.

The board comprises community and business leaders, with each jurisdiction allowed to nominate up to three private sector business leaders. These representatives must reflect a diverse mix of employers, including small, medium, and large businesses, ensuring they have direct hiring authority and a strong understanding of the local labor market.

The council's decision to appoint these representatives is expected to strengthen collaboration between local businesses and workforce development initiatives, ultimately benefiting the community by addressing employment needs and enhancing job opportunities.
