Birmingham High School Reports Summer Enrollment and Credit Recovery Success Rates

The Birmingham Community Charter High School (BCCHS) Board convened on July 26, 2025, to discuss several key updates regarding school operations and student programs. The meeting highlighted improvements in school facilities, summer school enrollment, and future enrollment projections.

One of the significant topics was the recent upgrades to the school's kitchen facilities, including new equipment and electrical enhancements. Additionally, the board discussed the installation of a privacy fence between Birmingham and Manuel schools, aimed at reducing noise and chaos during school hours.

The summer school program was another focal point, with five different sessions running to support student recovery and enrichment. The program achieved a 92% completion rate, although attendance issues led to a notable drop in enrollment, particularly among incoming ninth graders. The board noted that 78.7% of the students who dropped out did so due to attendance-related issues. However, proactive outreach efforts, including 315 phone calls to parents, helped retain many students in the program.

In terms of academic performance, 86.5% of grades issued during summer school were C's or higher, with special education and English learner students showing completion rates of 95% and 86%, respectively. The board expressed satisfaction with these results, emphasizing the importance of providing support to all student populations.

Looking ahead, the board reviewed enrollment projections for the upcoming school year. Currently, BCCHS has 3,250 students enrolled in the base program, with an additional 56 in pre-enrollment and three in non-public schools, totaling 3,309 students. This figure marks an increase from the previous year, indicating a positive trend in enrollment. However, the board acknowledged potential fluctuations in attendance as the school year begins, with some students possibly opting for magnet schools instead.
