Story County Community Foundation opens 2025 grant application for local nonprofits

The Nevada City Council meeting on July 28, 2025, focused on several pressing community issues, including updates on local grants and concerns regarding storm sewer backups affecting residents.

Karen Savte, the executive director of the Story County Community Foundation, provided an update on the 2025 grant season, which is now open for applications. Last year, the foundation awarded a record $190,000 in grants to various communities, including funding for the Nevada Public Library to acquire hot spots and tablets through the Story County Digital Equity Initiative. Savte encouraged local 501(c)(3) nonprofits and city entities, such as the library and fire department, to apply for grants before the September 30 deadline.

During the public forum, residents raised significant concerns about recent storm sewer backups that caused flooding in homes on Samson Drive. Matt McLeod, a resident, reported that his home experienced over three inches of water due to a malfunctioning storm sewer system, affecting multiple families in the area. Fellow resident Jim George echoed these concerns, highlighting the financial burden of cleanup and repairs, which could reach $12,000 for some families. Residents expressed frustration over the city's infrastructure and sought answers on how to prevent future incidents.

City officials acknowledged the issue and indicated that they are working with engineers to develop a plan to address the storm sewer problems. They committed to communicating findings and solutions to affected residents after a scheduled meeting with the engineers on August 7.

Additionally, Chad Johnson spoke in support of Kim Upton, who is seeking reimbursement for damages caused by a fallen tree on his property. The council discussed the ongoing communication with the construction company involved and the insurance claims process.

The meeting underscored the community's urgent need for infrastructure improvements and support for residents facing financial hardships due to recent weather events. The council's next steps will involve further discussions with engineers and continued engagement with affected residents to address their concerns.
