City Reviews Housing Policy Impact on Equity and Community Benefits

Spokane City officials are taking significant steps to enhance housing equity and accessibility as part of their ongoing policy evaluation efforts. During the July 23, 2025, Plan Commission Workshop, city representatives emphasized the importance of not only expanding housing options but also critically assessing who benefits from these policies and who may be adversely affected.

The discussions highlighted the need for a nuanced approach to housing policy, moving beyond simply allowing various housing types to be built. As Spokane prepares to update its comprehensive plan, officials noted that they would incorporate insights from the Housing Action Plan and other initiatives, such as the 2024 Fair Housing Plan. This comprehensive evaluation will consider whether current policies effectively accommodate the housing needs of all residents and whether they inadvertently contribute to racial disparities or displacement risks.
