Spark Summer Internship Program provides career opportunities for San Bernardino youth

The San Bernardino County government meeting on July 31, 2025, highlighted the successful conclusion of the Spark Summer Youth Employment Program, which provided over 130 teens and young adults with valuable work experience in public service. The program aimed to equip participants with essential workplace skills while allowing them to explore various career pathways within county departments.

Martha Guzman Hurtado, who introduced the meeting, emphasized the program's goal of offering gainful employment to community and foster youth. Out of approximately 1,200 applicants, 131 were selected, including 84 community youth and 47 foster youth. Participants were matched with mentors and engaged in hands-on experiences that fostered professional development.

Interns shared their experiences, noting the program's impact on their understanding of public service and career options. They participated in workshops covering topics such as financial literacy and technical skills, which are crucial for their future job prospects. Collectively, the interns completed over 21,900 hours of work, contributing to their communities while gaining insights into the workings of local government.

In addition to the Spark program, Second District Supervisor Jesse Armendariz announced a partnership with the Empire Strikers, a professional soccer team, to offer free soccer camps for youth. This initiative aims to provide children with access to professional coaching and promote teamwork. Armendariz also invited the community to the upcoming Second District annual open house on August 28, where residents can connect with county services and resources.

The meeting underscored the county's commitment to investing in its youth, providing them with opportunities that can lead to stable futures and career success. The Spark program, along with other initiatives, reflects a broader effort to support young people in their personal and professional development.
