The Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) Board of Hollywood convened on September 6, 2023, to discuss significant improvements to local properties, including a notable grant agreement for the 600 Plaza Motel located at 600 North Surf Road.
The board unanimously approved a resolution to execute a property improvement program grant agreement with the motel's owners, providing up to $75,000 for on-site enhancements. The total project cost is estimated at nearly $200,000, with the CRA grant contributing approximately 37% of the total investment. The planned improvements include new stair access points, architectural repairs, and high-end glass railings, aimed at beautifying the property situated in the heart of the Beach District.
Chris Cressido, the project manager for the Hollywood CRA, presented the project details, emphasizing the importance of the improvements for both the property and the surrounding area. The enhancements are expected to significantly elevate the aesthetic appeal of the building, which is a prominent feature along the Broadwalk.
During the meeting, board members expressed enthusiasm for the project but also raised concerns about the potential for further enhancements. Discussions included the possibility of increasing the grant amount to support additional improvements, such as replacing existing windows with hurricane impact glass. Board members highlighted the importance of addressing blight and ensuring that the property meets current safety standards.
The property owner’s representative, Ben, expressed eagerness to proceed with the renovations, acknowledging the challenges of balancing costs and the desire for a more visually appealing structure. He indicated that the family is committed to upgrading the property to set a positive example for other local businesses.
The board ultimately decided to approve the grant as presented, with conditions to eliminate temporary signage and ensure compliance with local regulations. The unanimous vote reflects a collective commitment to enhancing the community's appearance and safety, while also encouraging further investment in the area.
As the project moves forward, the CRA will continue to explore opportunities for additional funding and improvements, ensuring that the 600 Plaza Motel not only meets current standards but also contributes positively to the vibrant atmosphere of Hollywood Beach.
