Northeast Landcare Secures Conditional Use Permit for New Landscaping Operations

In a recent meeting of the Somersworth Planning Board, members discussed the approval of a conditional use permit for Northeast Landcare LLC, a landscaping company that plans to operate on a site previously proposed for a fence company. The board's decision reflects a commitment to balancing development with environmental considerations, particularly regarding the nearby wetland buffer.

The application, which involves 5,786 square feet of impervious pavement and 9,460 square feet of grading, was met with some scrutiny from the Conservation Commission. Although the commission did not provide a favorable recommendation, the board incorporated their conditions into the final approval. Notably, concerns were raised about bulk storage on the site, particularly regarding salt storage, which could potentially impact the wetlands. The board recommended that a roof be installed over the designated salt bin to prevent runoff.

Board member Mr. Witham expressed support for the project, highlighting its suitability for the location and the need for careful consideration of street lighting due to the company's potential overnight operations for snow removal. He proposed that the City’s Traffic Safety Committee evaluate the need for additional street lighting in the area, ensuring safety for both the business and the community.

The board ultimately voted unanimously to approve the conditional use permit, emphasizing the importance of adhering to environmental guidelines while allowing for necessary business operations.
