A significant water damage incident at the Clearwater Library has turned into a success story of resilience and teamwork. Following the event, the city quickly contracted Servpro from Largo to begin mitigation efforts, which started the same evening. The extensive repairs took about three months, with staff returning nearly four months later in December.
During the recovery, approximately 16,000 books were treated through a freezing process, resulting in an impressive 99% preservation rate. This low loss percentage was a relief for library officials, who noted the challenges of reshelving the treated books took considerable time and effort.
The incident also provided a unique opportunity for staff collaboration. About 45 to 50 employees were relocated to other library branches, fostering teamwork and allowing staff to experience different working environments. Library administration expressed gratitude for the city’s swift response, emphasizing that without immediate action, the losses could have been much greater.
Overall, what began as a challenging situation has transformed into a testament to the library's adaptability and the city's commitment to preserving community resources.
