Town Plans Major Water Infrastructure Overhaul with Three New Treatment Plants

The Hampstead Water Project Town Hall Meeting held on July 31, 2025, highlighted significant advancements in the town's water treatment infrastructure, marking what officials described as the largest public works initiative in Hampstead's history. The meeting focused on plans to centralize the water system by constructing three new water treatment plants and expanding an existing facility, aimed at improving water quality and addressing contamination issues.

Currently, many of Hampstead's developments rely on small pump houses with individual wells, which are inadequate for modern water treatment needs. The proposed project will consolidate multiple wells into centralized locations, allowing for more efficient treatment processes. Notably, the new facilities will incorporate Granulated Activated Carbon (GAC) equipment to effectively remove harmful substances, including PFAS chemicals and manganese, from the water supply.

One of the key components of the project involves bringing Well 33 back online, which has been out of service due to manganese contamination. By blending water from this well with others that have lower manganese levels, officials anticipate resolving the contamination issue. Additionally, two wells that have been offline for 15 years due to elevated nitrate levels will be integrated into the system, further enhancing water production capabilities.

The meeting also addressed the construction of new pipelines to connect wells from various developments to the new treatment plants. This includes plans for a new shallow water treatment plant adjacent to Hampstead Elementary School, which will serve the Shallow Run development. The project aims to ensure that all areas of Hampstead have access to safe and reliable drinking water.

As the town moves forward with these ambitious plans, residents can expect improved water quality and increased production capacity. The project not only addresses current contamination issues but also prepares Hampstead for future growth and development.
