Smith Residence Remodel Proposes New Bedrooms and Expanded Garage on Calle Ocho

The Carpinteria Architectural Review Board convened on July 31, 2025, to discuss the proposed addition and remodel of the Smith Residence located at 5560 Calle Ocho in the Conchiloma neighborhood. The meeting highlighted significant changes to the property, which currently features a single-story home with an attached garage.

The proposed project includes the addition of two new bedrooms and a new entryway, along with an expansion of the garage to accommodate a gym and mudroom. The kitchen layout will also be revised. Notably, the building height will increase from 13 feet 4 inches to 15 feet 10 inches, with overall plate heights raised to 10 feet. The existing garage will remain, but the garage door will be reoriented to face the street, necessitating the construction of a new driveway and curb.

Exterior modifications will feature vertical hardy board siding painted white, complemented by stone cladding on the front. The roof will transition from a red tile style to gray composition shingles. The landscaping plan includes the removal of three trees—one acacia and two plum trees—while new landscaping will introduce fruit trees, succulents, and artificial turf areas. Additionally, new hardscaping will incorporate permeable pavers in select locations.

The board's discussions also touched on the aesthetic implications of the proposed changes, ensuring that the remodel aligns with the community's architectural standards. The meeting concluded with a focus on the importance of maintaining the neighborhood's character while accommodating modern updates to residential properties.
