Milwaukee City's Avenues West Proposed Historic District Moves Forward for Approval

The City of Milwaukee's Historic Preservation Commission has proposed the establishment of the West Avenues West Historic District, a significant move aimed at preserving the architectural and cultural heritage of the area. This proposed district encompasses 114 parcels, stretching from North 22nd Street to North 27th Street, and includes notable streets such as West Wisconsin, West Wells, West Kilborn, and West State Streets.

The district features a rich tapestry of architectural styles, with structures dating from approximately 1885 to 1931. Among the buildings, 28 are non-residential, including commercial and institutional properties, while 6 are already listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The architectural styles represented include Queen Anne, Arts and Crafts, Neoclassical, and Art Deco, showcasing the evolution of the neighborhood from modest Victorian Gothic homes to grander designs as the area developed.

The historical significance of the district is underscored by its connection to prominent figures in Milwaukee's history, including successful businessmen and influential architects. The area was initially settled in 1835 and saw rapid development in response to the city's growing population in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. However, by the mid-20th century, many of the original mansions had been converted into rooming houses, reflecting a shift in the neighborhood's demographics and economic status.

The Commission's staff has recommended the permanent designation of the district based on three key criteria: its association with significant contributors to the city's culture, its embodiment of distinctive architectural styles, and its representation of the work of influential architects. This designation aims to protect and restore the architectural integrity of the area, ensuring that its historical narrative continues to be told.
