Mount Airy Council Seeks Storage Solutions for Cadet Program Equipment

During the Mount Airy Town Council meeting held on August 4, 2025, community safety and resource management took center stage as local organizations sought support for their operations and initiatives.

A representative from the Wings Bay Patrol highlighted the urgent need for a new meeting space, as their current location at the Isaac Walton League is no longer viable. The group, which currently has 29 cadets and several senior members, is looking for a facility to store equipment and conduct training sessions. They emphasized the importance of maintaining a quick response time for emergencies, urging council members to assist in identifying potential locations within Mount Airy.

In addition to the patrol's request, the meeting featured updates from the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company and the Monterey Police Department. The police reported a rise in calls for service, with 560 incidents recorded in July, compared to 493 the previous year. They also announced upcoming community events, including the Mount Airy Mile on August 9 and Celebrate Mount Airy on August 23, which will necessitate temporary road closures.

Mayor Hochauer introduced the formation of an inclement weather task force aimed at improving the town's preparedness for severe weather events. This initiative responds to increasing concerns about storm alerts and community safety, with the mayor inviting residents to join the task force to enhance communication and response strategies.

The council also discussed ongoing projects, including the long-awaited traffic circle, expected to begin construction soon, and updates from various commissions, including parks and recreation and beautification efforts.

As the meeting concluded, the council reaffirmed its commitment to addressing community needs and enhancing public safety, setting the stage for continued collaboration between local organizations and government officials. The next council meeting is scheduled for September 8, 2025.
