School District Enhances Student Support With Guidance Counselors Social Workers and Nurses

Safety and wellness in Oconee County schools are set to receive a significant boost following the recent Board of Education work session held on August 4, 2025. The board emphasized its commitment to ensuring a secure environment for all students, faculty, and staff across the district's 12 campuses. This initiative includes ongoing collaboration with local law enforcement and first responders to evaluate and enhance safety protocols throughout the school year.

A key focus of the meeting was the district's comprehensive approach to student wellness, which is supported by a dedicated team of guidance counselors, school nurses, and social workers. Each of the 12 schools is equipped with a guidance counselor, with a total of 1 at every elementary school, 2 at each middle school, and 4 at the high schools. These counselors play a vital role in fostering relationships with students, guiding them through their educational journey, and ensuring a safe learning environment.

The health services team, consisting of a full-time licensed nurse at each campus, also contributes significantly to student wellness. School nurses provide essential health care, administer medications, and conduct screenings, all while promoting healthy lifestyles among students and staff.

Additionally, the board highlighted the importance of school social workers, who facilitate connections between students, families, and community resources. With the recent approval of an additional social worker, the district now has three professionals dedicated to supporting students' social and emotional needs.
