Oconee County Schools is stepping up its commitment to special education and innovative teaching methods, as highlighted in the recent Board of Education work session on August 4, 2025.
During the meeting, Miss Whitaker detailed the district's robust professional learning initiatives, which included specialized training for co-teachers, speech language pathologists, and special education paraprofessionals. This year, co-teachers engaged in developing specially designed instruction tailored to individual students' needs, utilizing their IEPs and personal goals. Additionally, adaptive teachers received training on new reading and math curriculums aimed at alternate content students, ensuring that all educators are equipped to support diverse learning requirements.
A significant action item discussed was the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the Lighthouse program, which will now include partnerships with Barrow, Social Circle, and Jefferson City, expanding the collaborative efforts in special education services.
In a related update, the board also reviewed the success of the fifth annual Innovation Oconee event, held on July 25. This professional learning opportunity brought together around 100 educators, featuring a keynote address from renowned coach Jack Bauerly, who inspired attendees with insights on the parallels between coaching and teaching. The event showcased 28 presenters, primarily from within the district, emphasizing the importance of innovative strategies to enhance student engagement.
These initiatives reflect Oconee County Schools' dedication to fostering an inclusive and effective educational environment, ensuring that both students and educators are well-prepared for success.
