The Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) held an administrative meeting on August 6, 2025, focusing on critical discussions regarding gas service interruptions and safety protocols. The meeting provided insights into the performance of Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) during a recent test of their gas interruption system.
The first item on the agenda involved a detailed examination of BGE's physical interruption test conducted in January. A representative noted that BGE was responsible for assessing whether their boiler system could effectively cease gas usage during emergencies. However, it was revealed that the test was not successful, as BGE struggled to maintain consistent gas interruption over a period of 71 hours.
During the discussion, it was confirmed that while BGE attempted to halt gas usage, they only managed to do so effectively for about an hour. Importantly, PSC Engineering representative Barb Weber clarified that despite the failure to interrupt gas service, there were no reported impacts on customers during this period.
The meeting concluded with a consensus that while the test did not meet expectations, the lack of service interruptions ensured that no customers were adversely affected. The PSC plans to follow up with BGE for further details on improving their gas interruption protocols in future tests.
