As the presentation unfolded, city officials highlighted how ShotSpotter operates. The technology uses a network of sensors to detect gunfire, triangulating the exact location within seconds. This information is relayed to officers' smartphones and laptops, allowing them to respond swiftly—often within 60 seconds—far quicker than traditional 911 calls. This rapid response capability has been vital in addressing incidents that might otherwise go unreported, as nearly half of the confirmed shootings in the area occurred without any 911 calls.

The data shared during the meeting revealed that since the system went live in July 2022, there have been 123 confirmed shootings within the ShotSpotter coverage area, which represents only 4% of the city’s total area. Remarkably, 55 of these incidents were detected solely through ShotSpotter alerts, underscoring the system's role in enhancing community safety.

The meeting also featured compelling success stories that illustrated the technology's effectiveness. In one instance, officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert and discovered firearms and ammunition in a residence linked to a known gang member. In another case, the system helped officers track a vehicle involved in a drive-by shooting, leading to the recovery of multiple firearms.

The annual cost of maintaining this technology is $140,000, a price city leaders believe is justified given the safety benefits it provides.
