Capels Park Homeowners Seek Approval for Storm Window and Soffit Repairs

During the recent meeting of the Waukesha Landmarks Commission, members reviewed a request for repairs to the Lloyd Bauer House, a historic property located in the Capels Park Historic District. Built in 1928 and noted for its English Revival architecture, the house has been experiencing water damage, prompting the need for immediate attention.

The proposed repairs include fixing a damaged soffit and replacing a storm window. The soffit, located at a corner of the house, has suffered from rot, which the homeowners attribute to previous roof leaks. The homeowners, Nick and Alexandria Gorgesani, confirmed that the source of the leaks has been addressed, and they are now focused on repairing the damage. They plan to replace the compromised wood with epoxy to maintain structural integrity, ensuring minimal disruption to the original design.

Additionally, the storm window, currently made of plexiglass, will be replaced with a new wood window crafted from Akoya wood, known for its durability and rot resistance. The Gorgesanis expressed their desire for the new window to match the original appearance of the house, enhancing both its aesthetic and functional qualities.

Commission members also discussed a previous roof approval that had not received endorsement from the Wisconsin Historical Society due to concerns about the shadow cast by the shingles. This raised questions about the approval process and the need for clearer communication to ensure compliance with historical preservation standards.

The meeting highlighted the importance of maintaining the integrity of historic properties while addressing modern needs. The Gorgesanis are committed to restoring their home, and the commission's oversight aims to protect the architectural heritage of the Capels Park Historic District. As the homeowners prepare for the upcoming repairs, they also plan to evaluate the gutter system to prevent future water damage, indicating a proactive approach to home maintenance.
