Mayor Abowasili Proclaims August 10 2025 as Derecho Remembrance Day in Marion

Marion City Council commemorated the fifth anniversary of the devastating derecho that struck on August 10, 2020, with a heartfelt proclamation highlighting the community's resilience and recovery efforts. Mayor Nicholas Abowasili led the recognition, reflecting on the severe weather event that brought winds up to 140 miles per hour, causing extensive damage to homes, businesses, and the city’s beloved tree canopy.

The proclamation detailed the aftermath of the storm, noting that over 225 structures were severely damaged and nearly 41.5% of public trees were lost. In the wake of the disaster, the city mobilized a robust response, collecting over 1.2 million cubic yards of debris and raising more than $33 million for recovery efforts. Volunteers from Marion and beyond played a crucial role, providing aid and support to thousands of affected families.

In the years since the derecho, the city has made significant strides in recovery, planting nearly 8,500 trees on public lands and collaborating with local organizations to restore the natural environment. Mayor Abowasili emphasized the importance of remembering the event, stating, “It’s fitting to recognize it, to remember it, and to celebrate how far our city has come.” He expressed pride in the community's spirit and cooperation, which were vital in overcoming the challenges posed by the disaster.
