Prosecutor Office Reports 7577 Open Cases and Secures Conviction for Child Abuse

Eaton County's Public Safety Committee meeting on August 7, 2025, highlighted significant developments in the local prosecutor's office, particularly concerning the rising number of open cases and a recent successful conviction in a child abuse case.

Chris Anderson, the chief assistant prosecutor, reported that the office currently has 7,577 open cases, an increase of 85 from the previous month. In July alone, the office received 357 new case referrals and charged 158 new cases, while also declining or diverting 152 cases. Anderson emphasized the ongoing challenge of managing a growing caseload, stating, "We continue to take in more than we can address or close."

A notable highlight from the meeting was the conviction of a childcare center director for child abuse, a case that showcased the effective collaboration between the prosecutor's office and the sheriff's department. Anderson praised Detective Stephanie Scheib for her investigative work, which played a crucial role in securing the conviction.

Additionally, the prosecutor's office received commendation for its internship program, which has helped alleviate some backlog cases. Anderson expressed gratitude for the board's support in funding these internships, noting their significant contributions to the office's efficiency.

In a positive development, the office was recommended for a $180,000 grant aimed at enhancing the prosecution of intimate partner violence cases. This funding will support an assistant prosecutor and help cover clerical expenses, with Anderson acknowledging the hard work of team members who contributed to the grant application.
