Hazen Bay Campgrounds Explore Emergency Communication System After Storm Challenges

Mercer County officials are exploring new emergency alert systems to enhance safety for campers and residents in the area. During the recent commission meeting on August 6, 2024, discussions centered on the need for improved weather alerts, particularly in campgrounds where cell service is unreliable.

A local campground host highlighted the challenges faced during severe weather events, noting that current alert systems often fail to reach all campers in time. With the National Weather Service radar not covering all of North Dakota, the host proposed a solution that would provide alerts within a five-mile radius of the campgrounds, ensuring timely notifications for up to 300 people at a time.

The commission discussed potential partnerships with local park boards and cities to share the financial burden of implementing this system. Initial estimates for necessary infrastructure, such as cell boosters, could reach around $200,000, prompting calls for a collaborative funding approach. Suggestions included a cost-sharing model where local governments and campground fees contribute to the emergency system.

Commissioners expressed strong support for the initiative, emphasizing the importance of a structured plan that outlines each entity's financial commitment.
