Durham Mayor Discusses Housing Report Impact on Gentrification and Quality of Life

During the Durham City Council Work Session on August 7, 2025, discussions centered on the critical issue of housing supply and its implications for gentrification and community quality of life. The meeting highlighted a recent report from the Pew Charitable Trust, which revealed that the nationwide housing shortage has disproportionately affected low-income neighborhoods, driving rents higher in these areas compared to the national average.

The report emphasized that increasing housing supply, even for higher-income residents, can alleviate rent pressures across the board. Notably, all units are priced below 80% of the area median income, with some designated as deeply affordable.
