Architects Review Staff Entrance Design for New Facility on Corby Avenue

The Santa Rosa Design Review and Preservation Board convened on August 7, 2025, to discuss the architectural plans for a new commercial building, focusing on its design and functionality. Board members expressed concerns regarding the building's main entrance, which leads into a fluids room, and the staff entry located on Wilgen Court. The design includes a man door adjacent to service bays, which is expected to be the primary access point for employees. This raised questions about the egress path and accessibility from the parking area, particularly for those with disabilities. The board emphasized the need for clear and safe access routes, especially since the Wilgen Court entrance will be gated off.

Michael Baranowski, the project architect, clarified that while the break room door serves as a convenience for employees, the main access for staff will be from Corby Avenue. He noted that the design aims to enhance the building's visual appeal, particularly from the Wheel Jam side, to create a welcoming atmosphere for the neighborhood.

In addition to access concerns, board members discussed sustainability features, such as the potential for canopy trees and high-reflectance paving materials to mitigate heat gain from surrounding asphalt. While the architect acknowledged these suggestions, he indicated that the current design prioritizes functionality and compliance with operational needs.

The meeting highlighted the board's commitment to ensuring that new developments not only meet functional requirements but also contribute positively to the community's aesthetic and environmental goals.
