Mayor Bob Nelson honors Hot Springs High School Clay Busters as state trap shooting champions

The City of Hot Springs celebrated a significant achievement during its recent meeting on August 4, 2025, as Mayor Bob Nelson officially recognized the Hot Springs High School Clay Busters Trap Shooting Team for their outstanding performance in the South Dakota State Trap Shooting competition. The team, which includes athletes from Hot Springs, Custer, Edgemont, and local home-schooled students, showcased exceptional skill and teamwork, ultimately earning the title of overall high school state champions.

Competing against 425 shooters from 36 different schools, the Clay Busters achieved an impressive team score of 477 out of 500. This remarkable accomplishment not only highlights the dedication of the athletes but also reflects the strong leadership of team captains Zeta Kiel and Ray Sanders, who inspired their teammates throughout the season. Additionally, individual team members Zayden LaPlaca, Zeta Kiel, Ray Sanders, and Carter Walls received Allstate recognition for their exceptional marksmanship.

Mayor Nelson emphasized the pride this victory brings to the community, noting that the team's success serves as an inspiration for future generations of student athletes.
