Collierville's Board of Mayor and Aldermen is set to approve significant changes to the town's zoning ordinance, aimed at boosting economic development and modernizing business models. During the meeting on August 11, officials discussed a comprehensive update that will allow new types of businesses to thrive in the area.
The proposed changes include revisions to the use table, definitions of various business types, and adjustments to conditional use permits. Notably, businesses that serve alcohol, such as bars and liquor stores, will now be permitted by right in certain zoning districts, rather than requiring a conditional use permit. This shift is designed to streamline the process for new establishments and align with contemporary business practices.
Additionally, entertainment venues will be relocated from industrial zones to commercial areas, where infrastructure can better support their needs. This move is expected to enhance the local economy by attracting more visitors and providing a wider range of entertainment options.
The planning commission has already recommended approval of these changes, which also include the introduction of new definitions for businesses like nightclubs and microbreweries. These updates aim to clarify regulations and improve enforcement.
If the board approves the ordinances in their upcoming readings, the changes will take effect on August 25. Staff will then update necessary forms and provide training to ensure a smooth transition to the new regulations. The board is poised to take a significant step forward in shaping Collierville's economic landscape, fostering a more vibrant community.
