Yankton City Commission Approves Rezoning and Roadwater Main Improvements

Yankton City Commission has taken significant steps towards enhancing community infrastructure during its regular meeting on August 11, 2025. The commission discussed the timing of upcoming elections and approved two major construction projects aimed at improving local facilities.

One of the key topics was the potential shift of city elections to November. Commissioners expressed that a November election would attract a larger voter turnout, aligning with statewide and national races. While some cities conduct elections in June, the consensus leaned towards November, with further discussions planned for the next meeting to finalize the decision. This change aims to increase civic engagement and ensure that residents are more informed and involved in local governance.

In addition to electoral discussions, the commission awarded contracts for two important construction projects. The first project involves the Eighth Street Railroad water main crossing improvements, which will be executed by Fiber Construction for $815,515. This project addresses critical water main failures under railroad tracks, ensuring reliable water service for residents.

The second project focuses on the construction of a new parking lot at Fifth and Cedar Streets, in partnership with the UCC Church. Feinberg Construction was awarded the contract for $289,008.92. This initiative aims to provide additional parking spaces, particularly for those with mobility issues, enhancing accessibility to City Hall and surrounding facilities. The partnership with the church allows for shared use of the parking lot, optimizing space during times when both entities are not in heavy use.
