Wake County Schools Launches Innovative Programs to Support High-Risk Students

Wake County Schools is making significant strides in community engagement and mental health support, as highlighted during the recent Community Engagement Committee meeting. The collaboration between schools and local organizations has reached new heights, with a focus on innovative programs aimed at supporting families and students.

Key speaker representatives from Wake County Schools and partner organizations, including WakeMed and KidsPeace, emphasized the importance of their partnership in launching six major programs over the past seven years. These initiatives are designed to create a comprehensive system of care that prioritizes family engagement. Notably, nearly 90% of families have agreed to participate in these programs, demonstrating strong community support.

The flagship program, which began 11 years ago, has seen a surge in referrals from Wake County Schools, particularly for high-risk students. Under the leadership of Michael and Tannetta Sutton, the program has successfully managed close to 600 referrals, focusing on students who require the most intensive support after schools have exhausted their resources.

In 2019, the program received the state innovation award for its commitment to timely mental health services, achieving an impressive engagement rate increase from 23% to 83%. This success underscores the critical need for immediate support, which is now available to students from pre-kindergarten through high school.

The partnership also emphasizes data-driven decision-making, sharing insights with Wake County Schools to identify trends and develop new programs, such as the student engagement team pilot. This collaborative approach not only enhances the educational experience but also ensures that every child, regardless of their insurance status, receives the necessary support.
