The board discussed the applicant's plans for interior renovations, which will not alter the building's exterior. The facility aims to provide a family-friendly environment, with a focus on mental challenges and teamwork. The applicant, Donald R. McLaren, emphasized his commitment to community involvement and the successful operation of similar facilities in Tewksbury and Waltham. The board expressed support for the application, noting that it meets all zoning requirements and will utilize existing infrastructure effectively.

In a separate discussion, Bayshore Athletic Club applied for a special permit to relocate its fitness center to 160 Granite Street. The club, which has been a staple in Braintree for over two decades, plans to occupy a larger space that offers better access and parking. Timothy Dowling, representing the club, highlighted the benefits of moving to a location that has been vacant for several years, thus revitalizing the area. The board acknowledged the importance of retaining local businesses and the positive impact this move could have on the community.

Both applications received favorable responses from the board, which voted to approve the special permits and site plan reviews, pending the drafting of formal decisions to be finalized in September.
