Modesto Celebrates Graduate Youth for Leadership and Civic Engagement Initiatives

The City of Modesto Council convened on August 12, 2025, to recognize the achievements of local youth and discuss their contributions to the community. The meeting commenced with a proclamation celebrating National Youth Day, presented to John Torres and Marvin Jacobo, who highlighted the accomplishments of the 2025 cohort of the Latino Leadership Initiative. This group recently completed an eight-month leadership development course, creating action plans aimed at enhancing civic engagement within their communities.

Council members expressed their admiration for the youth's dedication and innovative ideas. Council Member Escutia Brayton emphasized the importance of youth leadership, noting the impressive presentations made by the cohort on civic engagement. Other council members echoed these sentiments, praising the initiative's impact on the future leaders of Modesto.

Following the proclamation, the Modesto Youth Commission presented their annual report, led by Vice Chair Sabrina Torr. The commission, reinstated for the 2022-2023 school year, has focused on expanding its reach and diversity, successfully filling 11 vacancies from 18 applications. They formed six subcommittees to tackle various community issues, including outreach, social media, and wellness.

The Youth Commission has actively participated in community events, such as the Love Modesto initiative and the California Association of Youth Commissions conference, where they engaged with peers on topics like youth voting and mental health. Looking ahead, they plan to host a 5K run, enhance community outreach, and provide educational presentations in schools.

Council members commended the Youth Commission for their hard work and community involvement, with several expressing their excitement for the future contributions of these young leaders. The meeting concluded with a call for continued support and engagement from the community, reinforcing the vital role of youth in shaping Modesto's future.
