Hendrick Health Partners with Developers for Historic Downtown Abilene Revitalization

A significant redevelopment project is on the horizon for downtown Abilene, as the Board of Adjustment discussed plans to transform a historic building into a mixed-use space. The proposal, which has garnered strong support from local stakeholders, aims to blend commercial space with residential units, specifically targeting hospital staff from Hendrick Health.

Brad Benham from Hendrick Health highlighted the collaborative efforts over the past two years to navigate the redevelopment process. He emphasized the importance of preserving the building's historic value while also addressing the housing needs in the area. "To find a group that wants to restore the historic value while also bringing housing to Abilene is a good thing," Benham stated, referencing the successful renovation of the former Travis Elementary School into Landmark.

The project aims to revitalize a site that has been vacant for two years, previously serving as office space. The Board expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, with members noting the positive impact it could have on the downtown experience. One member remarked, "Anything that we can do to continue to promote our city, promote downtown, is a positive."

Plans include removing outdated concrete panels from the first floor and potentially restoring a historic neon sign, which would enhance the building's aesthetic appeal. The developers are committed to maintaining the integrity of the structure while modernizing its use.
