Entergy Texas Proposes 500 kW Natural Gas Generator Installation at Civic Center

During a recent Port Arthur City Council meeting, Entergy Texas Incorporated presented a proposal to install a 500 kW natural gas generator at the Civic Center. This initiative is part of Entergy's Power Through program, which aims to enhance energy reliability across the four states it serves, following approval from the Public Service Commission late last year.

Greg Gilbo, representing Entergy, outlined the generator's operational framework, emphasizing its role in providing backup power during outages. The generator will automatically switch on if the grid fails, ensuring that the Civic Center remains powered without interruption. This system is designed to be user-friendly, with an automated transfer switch that seamlessly transitions between grid power and generator power, typically within ten seconds of an outage.

One of the key advantages of this project is that it comes at no upfront cost to the city. Entergy will cover the entire installation and maintenance expenses, making it a turnkey solution. The costs associated with operating the generator will be incorporated into the monthly utility bill, ensuring that the Civic Center benefits from reliable power without the burden of additional expenses.

Gilbo highlighted the environmental benefits of using a natural gas generator compared to traditional diesel options, which require refueling during major events. The natural gas supply is expected to remain consistent, reducing logistical challenges during emergencies. Additionally, the generator's quiet operation and sound attenuation features were noted, making it suitable for use in a community setting.

The proposal also includes a partnership model where Entergy can utilize the generator for system support during peak demand periods, further enhancing the reliability of the energy grid. The Civic Center's historical peak demand of 361 kW aligns well with the proposed generator's capacity, ensuring that it can adequately meet the facility's energy needs.
