Board of Education approves $18K Indian Education Grant and four-year Care Solace extension

Wisconsin Rapids Public Schools (WRPS) made significant strides in enhancing educational services and community support during its recent Board of Education meeting held on August 11, 2025. The board approved two key grants aimed at improving student outcomes and mental health resources.

The first major decision was the acceptance of an $18,395 grant under Title VI of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, specifically designed to support American Indian students. This funding will facilitate various initiatives, including literacy programs, cultural awareness activities, and professional development for teachers. The goal is to foster academic achievement and strengthen parental engagement within the community.

In addition, the board approved a four-year extension of its partnership with Care Solace, funded by a Legacy Foundation grant. This partnership will provide mental health support services across the district, reinforcing WRPS's commitment to the physical, emotional, and intellectual wellness of its students and staff.

The meeting also included updates on the district's crisis response training, which has seen a reduction in incidents requiring seclusion and restraint, dropping from 35 to 22 incidents in the past year. Superintendent Ron Rasmussen emphasized the importance of monitoring these incidents to improve intervention strategies and staff training.

Further discussions highlighted the district's multi-level systems of support, which aim to ensure that all students receive the necessary academic, social, and emotional assistance. This framework is designed to create a safe and respectful learning environment, essential for student success.

In business services, the board approved a scope summary and fee proposal from Myron Construction, which will assist in facility studies and community engagement for potential future construction projects. The district also reported a steady credit rating, which is crucial for financial planning and future funding opportunities.

The meeting concluded with personnel updates, including a new incentive program for substitute teachers to address ongoing shortages, offering bonuses based on the number of assignments completed.
