Mountain Housing Opportunities proposes 159 affordable units in Asheville development plan

Buncombe County is set to see a significant boost in affordable housing as the Board of Adjustment approved plans for a new development featuring 159 residential units across three structures during their meeting on August 13, 2025. This project, spearheaded by Mountain Housing Opportunities, aims to provide 100% affordable housing, adhering to the guidelines of the Affordable Housing Act.

The development will include a mix of three- and four-story buildings, with a maximum height of 55 feet. The site, which spans approximately 6.5 acres, will feature essential amenities such as picnic areas, playgrounds, and pedestrian pathways, enhancing community connectivity. A landscape buffer will be implemented around the project to mitigate potential adverse effects on surrounding properties, addressing concerns related to noise and glare.

In compliance with Buncombe County regulations, a traffic impact analysis was conducted, ensuring that the development's access point on Old County Home Road aligns with best practices for traffic flow. The project also includes provisions for public water and sewer services, with favorable pressure and flow rates confirmed by local authorities.

Importantly, the developers have committed to maintaining affordability for 45 years, exceeding the minimum requirement of 15 years. This long-term commitment is expected to significantly benefit the community by providing stable housing options for residents.
