Lawrence officials secure $72K for playground equipment at Fifth and Richard

During the recent City of Lawrence meeting, officials discussed several community-focused initiatives, including funding for playground equipment and ongoing infrastructure improvements that aim to enhance local parks and recreational facilities.

A significant highlight was the announcement of approximately $36,000 in grant funds designated for new playground equipment at the intersection of 40th and Richard. This funding will be matched by Game Time Equipment, allowing the city to invest a total of $72,000 in the project. The equipment is designed to be compact and modular, making it suitable for the available space. This investment is expected to provide a much-needed upgrade to local play areas, directly benefiting families and children in the community.

In addition to playground improvements, the meeting touched on ongoing sewer work by Citizens Energy Group at Community Park. The project involves redirecting a portion of the force main and installing an 18-inch pipe, which will be temporarily above ground. While this work may cause some disruption, it is part of a broader effort to enhance the city's infrastructure.

The meeting also addressed the maintenance of the Arts Building and theater, which will soon fall under the Parks Department's responsibilities. This transition aims to streamline upkeep and ensure that these cultural facilities are well-maintained for community use. Upcoming remediation work, funded by a bond issue, is set to address drainage issues in the theater, with plans for completion in October.
