Game Commission Approves New Hunting Seasons for Military Units in Kansas

During the recent Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) Commission meeting on August 14, 2025, significant changes to hunting regulations on military lands were discussed, directly impacting local hunters and wildlife management efforts.

The meeting highlighted proposed exceptions to statewide hunting seasons for three military subunits: Fort Riley, Fort Leavenworth, and Smoky Hill. These changes aim to better align hunting opportunities with military training schedules while promoting wildlife conservation.

At Fort Riley, the proposed open firearm season is set from December 13 to December 21, with an additional antlerless deer season running from January 1 to January 11 and November 28 to November 30. Additionally, three antler-only permits would be valid on the fort, enhancing hunting opportunities for local residents.

Fort Leavenworth is looking to adjust its rifle season to November 15-16, November 22-23, November 27-30, December 6-7, and December 13-15. Notably, it will not participate in the extended January season, which runs from January 1 to January 18. Instead, the archery season for antlered and white-tailed deer will be available from January 19 to January 31.

Smoky Hill, which operates under different guidelines, will participate in the statewide hunting seasons, ensuring that local hunters have access to these military lands.

These adjustments reflect the KDWP's commitment to balancing hunting opportunities with military operations, ultimately benefiting both the local community and wildlife management.
